We Love This House!
01:08
|
|
||
forget that the floor is lava
there's a crack in your voice
ceiling it's lined with clovers
gravity singled us out
parallel lines
your eyes weren't open
no real reason that the mirror cracked
think it's funny, came right back
house plants dance in the corner now
we can join them later as we touch the ground
house plants dance in the corner now
we can join them later as we touch the ground

Ghost Runner On First
01:09
|
|
||
our first hit this whole game
ghost man on first base
a real runner just invisible
see thru man, can't him home
the ghost man only advances when
when you force him to, then he's forced to
run ghost run, but nothing he can do
when the pitcher throws outside o 0-2
he haunts the bases til the third out comes
or he scores the run then blends into us
the pitcher throws outside on 0-2
run ghost run you're one of us
our pants just covered in a bit more dust
concentration broken in between each pitch, fouled off again
cursive my name into the dirt with a borrowed mitt pray for the hit
ghost runner on first base
ghost runner, stuck in his ways he can't escape

cross my heart
over the fireplace
blink twice to be
and I'm someplace else

Last Year's Notebooks
02:34
|
|
||
disregarded vanity from last week
scatter all the pages and notecards
just to make it a contest
for this year's lies I thought I told you
always rushing caught in the headlights
drowning somewhere without strip malls
never overwhelming
drowning somewhere
it's nice that
for this year's lies I thought I told you
And you know it better than I do
first time won't be the last time

Paperbacks
01:39
|
|
||
strangling the ink thru a spatula's forehead
foregrounding the only satchel of mink or you're dead
I had this one in paperback but now it's out of print
I had to run a steeplechase but it turned into a sprint
rip the page the copyright is wrong
rip the page rip the page the copyright is wrong (dead wrong)
the hardcover version is back in print
I prayed to run a steeplechase
god wants to see me sprint
the ink is splashing on the floor
burn the paperbacks to keep me warm
strangling the ink scattered split open forehead
foreground my failures with the misprint a misstep
you're dead
had to run a paperback but now it's out of print
had to run a steeplechase but it turned into a sprint
rip the page the copyright is wrong
rip the page the copyright is wrong (dead wrong)

Like Heaven
03:10
|
|
||
moments sweeter than the dried mango mom gave me in the house surrounded by billboards my sister would hide out in the pillboxes orbiting the property line she'd stay out until tires screeched across the gravel road scraped knees scrambling back to the beach chairs lining the front porch mom would fish gnats out of her eyes and dad would sit us down.
on may 8th in the family car I dozed off for the fourth and final time sleep with no gratitude falling in and out like some 50 ticket carnival ride.
the propane truck was still in front my shirt time-stamped with sweat my ribs were sore from sitting still and my cheeks were pressed against the door just like heaven it was just like heaven like heaven.
face is a candle
blue flame and all
tried to hold it
but the words wouldn't fall
blisters always sting
and the cuts they never burn
(ribbons around your thumbs)
stoke the flames
in two small hands
now my palms have overturned

Next Year's Notebooks
01:11
|
|
||
head-splitting eyes break and
fingers in the back of the couch
cookie crumbs
pick em out
spinning laundry cycles in the dark
fingers in the back of the couch
cookie crumbs
pick em out
pick em out
...out of the sofa fortress
write in the diary
with a flashlight
under/covers
until/next year
scatter all
the notecards
just to make memorizing it
extra hard
the first time
you said you
won't remember
what you wrote down
won't be the
last time you
find out what you found out the first time around
(full circle, full circle, full circle, for the first time around)

Delaware
02:58
|
|
||
mark the names in every calendar
water plants in the rain
in the mudroom when we were kids
take a good look I'm sure you did
delaware's a rest stop on the way to your house
all too much it's what you said
couldn't stop it from coming down
and the fire department crashed on your lawn
nobody smiled they were already gone
wave from your window to me
delaware's a rest stop on the way to your house
all too much it's what you said
couldn't stop it from coming down
x's over your eyes
marked in passing
lying in the shade
metal just devours me
lying in a field
gardens fall eventually
lying in my sleep
you are very proud of me
lying wide awake
sunlight reigns it showers me

State Lines/Time Zones
02:15
|
|
||
fragments line the street
airflow under quilted flowers outlast me
state lines
server signal
hoarse and out of tune
hoarse and out of tune
hoarse and out of tune
wasted stamp on congratulations
don't be a stranger please don't be a stranger
a station wagon through the glass door
always the favorite you were always the favorite
misguided narration and musings
taking all your problems
trace them back with ease
cooperation
in regards to you and I
not you and me
time zones
a faded passport
a great ship lock
the water isn't rising

new year's eve and paper crowns
you can't save them now
fireworks fall to the ground
we just chase them down
rain drips and falls from your eyelashes
hands held to my face
daylight savings never came
another four months (another reminder)
another four months (there's nothing behind us)
the summer won't break me like it used to
but my new year's resolutions never come true
the summer won't break me like it used to
but my new year's resolutions never come true
the summer won't break me
underneath the water, in the tunnel
I saw you stand against the wall

9-Man Roster
03:04
|
|
||
it's just a game
it's just a baseball game
I know what you would say
you can't win unless you play
our pitcher got replaced
deserted first and third base
taking all the way
forgetting to protect the plate
can't bunt a homerun
what are we scared of
taking the unwritten
wisdom
can't bunt a homerun
sit out the anthem
9 prodigal sons
I'm one
can't bunt a homerun
on deck circle silent
hit and run signs up
I'm up
I'm up
spitballs chewed gum, untied lace
outfield's minefield, costly mistakes
extra innings pennant race
the box score misprint, late game
dropped ten straight
can't bunt a homerun
can't bunt a homerun
I'm up
I'm up
can't bunt a homerun
what are we scared of
taking the unwritten
wisdom
can't bunt a homerun
sit out the anthem
9 prodigal sons
I'm one
I'm one

Sacrifice Fly
01:02
|
|
||
pop fly collide on the infield
dead fly annihilated windshield
I try but can't complete the simple
tasks in my life sacrifice fly
and it is taking all my focus
just to get the easy outs
I pitch around my doubts
I pitch around my doubts
run me down an easy ground
ball out I feel forced at first
give up before my legs give out
let's go home now (if that's even allowed)
slaughter rule home team forfeits
we're ten runs down
pop fly collide on the infield
dead fly annihilated windshield
I pitch around my doubts I pitch around my doubts
I try but can't complete the simple
tasks in my life sacrifice fly
(and it is taking all my focus
just to get the easy outs)

you’re a concrete pillar
stand tall like a column
resounding
disapproval
over my prerogative
resounding
disapproval
trapdoor
trapdoor
trapdoor
restraint
trapdoor
trapdoor
trapdoor
restraint
with no punchline
nightmare sphere
walking all over
walking around
walking around
walking all over
walking around
walking around
restraint
restraint
restraint
trapdoor
restraint
restraint
restraint
restraint
can silence break the glass

Joshua
02:43
|
|
||
your pillow smelled like death
laugh until we can't see
joshua make the sound
just breathe
blacker than your pupils could ever be
remember splinters and bee stings
when the minutes drag longer wait for me
blacker than your pupils could ever be
thought I saw you
there were three
the hearse, the bicycle, and your cleats
never a mistake till one of us leaves

Thank You Lantern
01:30
|
|

my buddy he's trying to be healthy
get fit, ripped, and go gluten-free
so he gave me a big box of pasta
that he was never going to eat
thanks for the rotini
it was good with some parmesan cheese
my friend's trying to give up on drinking so much
and get his head clear for a while
he gave me a bottle of ten-dollar bottle of wine that he was just going to pour out
thanks for the wine
we don’t usually have something that fine around here
my coworkers trying to downsize
so he's selling off his cds
he let me take a look before pawning them off
and you know I grabbed 2 or 3
I needed that kate bush remaster
and I never had heard that mudhoney before
and I know it’s all digital now but you sure you don’t need this kinks best of I love you
and I'll fill my belly my cup and my shelves
and I'll say thank you for advice that you tell
but a hundred times more a hundred thousand times more
I'll get and I'll get and I'll get and I'll get
but I'll forget to say thank you for it
I got so I've got to say thanks a lot
